Description

Adenia spinosa 8-9cm is a striking, drought-tolerant caudiciform succulent native to arid regions of Africa and Madagascar. Its care requirements reflect its adaptation to hot, dry climates and its unique water-storing caudex.

Provide bright, indirect sunlight. While Adenia spinosa can tolerate some direct sun, especially in the morning or late afternoon, intense midday sunlight may scorch its leaves, so filtered light or partial shade is ideal.

Thrives in warm conditions, ideally between 21–29°C during the growing season.

Protect from frost.

Requires well-draining, slightly acidic soil (pH ~6.5).

A mix of sandy or loamy soil with added perlite or coarse sand is ideal.

Water thoroughly every 3–4 days in summer, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

In autumn, gradually reduce watering as the plant prepares for dormancy.

During the growing season (spring and summer), fertilize every 2–3 weeks with a succulent fertilizer high in phosphorus and potassium.

Do not fertilize during autumn and winter dormancy.

Use deep pots to accommodate the caudex and encourage healthy root growth.

Adenia spinosa is mildly toxic to pets and humans. Wear gloves when handling, and keep out of reach of children and animals.

The plant is winter dormant. Leaf drop signals the start of dormancy and the time to stop watering.
