Description

Matalea cyclophylla (also known as Gonolobus cyclophyllus or “Milk Vine”) is a rare caudiciform succulent native to rocky, limestone-rich regions of Mexico. It is prized for its corky, swollen caudex and vining habit.

Provide bright, indirect light or partial shade. The leaves benefit from good light, but the caudex should be protected from direct, intense sun to prevent scorching.

Indoors, a spot near a bright window with filtered sun is ideal. Outdoors, morning sun or dappled shade works well.

: Water frequently, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. The plant is more tolerant of dryness than excess moistur

: When leaves drop and the plant goes dormant, stop watering completely until new growth appears in spring. Overwatering during dormancy can cause rot.

In general, err on the side of underwatering, especially when the plant is leafless or dormant.

Use a well-draining, porous soil mix-a cactus or succulent mix with added gravel or perlite works well.

Prefers warm conditions, ideally above 10°C. It is frost-sensitive and should be protected from cold.

Fertilize sparingly during the growing season (spring/summer) with a diluted, balanced fertilizer.

This species is winter-dormant: it naturally drops its leaves and stops growing in cooler months. During this time, keep the plant dry and avoid disturbing the caudex.

Resume watering only when new leaf buds appear in spring.
